It’s all in the name! Literally meaning ‘south’ in Sanskrit, Andhra Pradesh is said to be mentioned in the Mahabharata as a tribe which fought on the side of Pandavas and Kauravas. Andhras are also said to be the sons of Vishwamitra. Life of Andhra Pradesh, till now! The historical life of Andhra Pradesh begins with its mention in Anguttara Nikaya, a Buddhist text. Further, Andhra tribe is referred to in Sanskrit literature like Mahabharata and Aitareya Brahmana. Greek traveller Megasthenes also talks about the state as having three towns with fortification and a strong army. Kuberaka and his son Varun ruled coastal Andhra (the Guntur district) in ancient times. About 4th century BCE, the Mauryan Empire established their rule in Andhra and was overtaken by Satavahanas in 3rd century BCE. A series of other dynasties including Pallavas, Rashtrakutas, and Cholas reigned over the region later. The Kakatiya dynasty came into power in 12th and 13th centuries BCE, conquered by Delhi Sultanate consequently.
