    Puri Beach - Puri Beach like other beaches of Puri is very long and quiet. You can reach most of the famous temples with ease as they are all situated close to the beach only. Numerous stalls line up around the beach for tourists to pick up souvenirs made of shells, jute and many lamp shades or wall hangings made from patch work.

     

    Chilika Lake - Chilika Lake is another great destination to visit. This lake is Asia’s largest salt water lagoon. Situated near the Bay of Bengal, this lake is separated from the sea by only a small neck like piece of land. This is a favorite migratory spot for a numerous birds during winter.

     

    Swargadwar - Swargadwar is situated along the sea shore and holds a lot of attraction owing to the mythical stories attached to this place. It is believed that a person who passes away at this place is directly transported to heaven and is also able to attain complete moksha or salvation. It is believed that a very famous Vaishnava saint, Sri Chanitanya Mahaprabhu merged into the sea at this place.

     

    Sakshi Gopal Temple - The diminutive version of the Jagannath Temple is the Sakshi Gopal Temple. The temple is dedicated Lord Krishna and his consort, Radha. These idols were brought to this shrine by King Pratapruda Deva. When you visit the Jagannath Temple, it is a must that you also offer prayers at Sakshi Gopal Temple, without which your offering is considered incomplete.

     

    Daya River - Daya River in Puri, a branch of Kuakhai River, starts at Saradeipur. It joins with Malaguni River and flows into Chilika Lake on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. This 37 km long river is historically important as the infamous Kalinga war was fought on the river bank. It was also the cradle of an early civilization. On the banks of Daya River is located the Dhauli Hill where the Kalinga war was fought in the 3rd century BC. It is after this war that King Ashoka gave up all wars and became the disciple of Lord Buddha. There is a Shanti Stupa on the hill on which there are many stone panels. One of them depicts Lord Buddha in a reclining position and the other shows King Ashoka offering his sword to Lord Buddha. Saddharma Monastery on Dhauli Hill and some rock cut caves are nearby attractions. The Chilika Lake where the river ends is a brackish water lake famous for varieties of marine life and also as a bird sanctuary. Historians, ornithologists and experience seekers would enjoy a visit to this place.

     

    Kanchi Ganesha Temple - Puri is one of the important Hindu religious place, as one of the original Char Dham pilgrimage sites, it is famous for Lord Jagannath Temple. Kanchi Ganesha Temple is a small temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha located inside the famous Jagannath Temple complex. As per legends this idol was gifted by King of Kanchi. The deity in the form of 'Uchhista Ganapati' is seen very rarely in the temples. Kanchi Ganesha Temple is just behind the main Jagannath Temple and has an iron fence to protect from monkeys. There is an idol of 'Mooshika' (mouse), the official transporter of the Lord in front of the temple which devotees touch to fulfill their wishes. It is strange that the body of the 'Mooshika' is still prickly even after it has been touched by so many devotees. Devotees can conduct their own Puja to Lord Ganesha in this temple. Besides the temples of Lord Jagannath and Kanchi Ganesha there are many other temples dedicated to Gods Surya, Vimala, Saraswati, Bhuvaneshwari, Narasimha, Rama, Hanuman and Eshaneshwara inside the temple complex.

     

    Loknath temple - Close to Jagannath temple lays the 11th century Loknath temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to history the lingam in this temple was established by Lord Rama. The unique feature is that the shivalinga is always under water which substantiates the legend that Goddess Ganga flows through the top of the shivalinga as a stream. The festival that is celebrated with great fervor and pomp is the Saranti Somobar Fair while devotees believe that the shivalinga has powers to cure diseases after seeking the darshan of Lord Shiva.

     

    Gundicha Temple - Gundicha Temple is situated towards the north east direction of the Jagannath temple and was constructed in the 16th century. It is shaped like a dome with Lord Vishnu’s wheel adorning the top. Gundicha temple is popularly referred to as His aunt’s house because when the Rath Yatra festival takes place, Lord Jagannath is shifted to the Gundicha temple for seven days. As it is located in the middle of a beautiful garden, it is also known as Garden House.

     

    Lakshmi Temple - The Lakshmi Temple, devoted to Goddess Lakshmi, is one among the famous temples of Puri. It is situated very close to Lord Jagannath Temple and plays a very important role in the Rath Yathra. It is believed that when the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati takes place, Goddess Lakshmi invites them to this shrine.

     

    Vimala Temple - Built by the Somavamsi kings in the 10th century, is the Vimala Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Shakti, another incarnation of Goddess Parvati. This sanctum has 7 incarnations of Goddess Parvati within the premises namely, Varahi, Chamundi, Kaumari, Andri, Vaishnavi, Brahmi and Maheshwari.
