    Shimlipal National Park - India’s one of the biggest wildlife sanctuaries and National Park, Shimlipal is situated in the Mayurbhanj district of Orissa. Covering an area of 2,750 sq. km, Shimlipal has a core area of 850 sq. km. This park is in a plateau region surrounded by low peaks all around. Similpal derives its name from the series of red silk cotton plants or Semul that grows here abundantly. Shimlipal National Park has two waterfalls named Barehipani and Joranda. It shelters around 432 wild elephants, 99 Royal Bengal Tigers, Chausingas, Gaurs or Indian Bisons and an orchidarium. Tourists can enter this park via Jashipur and Pithabata (22 km) from Bariapada. The park is open from 1st October- 15th June, and entry permit of which can be obtained from Pithabata check gate and Range Officer on paying the pre-arranged fees.

     

    Bhimakunda - Travellers can reach Bhimkunda by travelling on the State Highway no-11 through Dhenkikote. From here, another 20 km will take them to Keonjhar from where Bhimakunda can be reached. The total distance from Baripada is 162 km. Close to the Booring village, the river Vaitarani steps down from a gorge and creates a pool. This pool is considered sacred as the legend states that Bhima, one of the Pandavas, used to bathe in this pool. Hence the pool derives its name from Bhima. Though there are no bus services available on this route, this place can be reached via roadways that remain in good shape in all seasons.

     

    Khiching - Located 149 km away from Baripada is Khiching that has the Kichakeswari Temple, the household Goddess of the Mayurbhanj’s ruling kings. This temple is unique in India as it is solely made out of chlorite slabs. In proximity of this place, there are numerous temples depicting the Kalinga skill of masonry and are still actively worshipped. Another temple of this area, renowned for its stone carvings is the temple of Goddess Chamunda. This temple still bears Oriyan inscriptions on its walls from the Mayurbhanj kings. The ruins of an ancient fort are still present in the temple’s west side.

     

    Haripur - In 1400 AD, Maharaja Harihar Bhanj, founded the earlier capital of Mayurbhanj State, Haripur, which is 16 km from Baripada. The main attraction of this place is the Rasikaraya, which is a brick temple. The north of this temple’s courtyard is the remains of the inner residence of the queen or Ranihansapura. Close to this temple are two temples, one is Radhamohan and the other of Jagannath, of which; the latter was built following the architecture style called Goudiya.

     

    Jashipur - Locted 94 km from Baripada, on the National Highway 6, is one of the points of entry into the Simlipal Tiger Reserve. Tourists can visit Simlipal through this way, as the road is good with buses easily available on the route. Travellers visiting Simlipal can stay at the rest houses, private hotels and guesthouses of this area. Another tourist attraction of Jashipur is The Crocodile Rearing Centre located at Ramatirtha.

     

    Rairangapur - Rairangapur is at a distance of 82 km from Baripada. It is famous for a Jagannath Temple. It is situated on the Baripada Tata Nagar Road that is connected with daily bus services. The best time for tourists to visit this place is during the Ratha Yatra or Chariot Festival of Jagannath, which is a huge crowd-puller.

     

    Manatri - At a distance of 44 km from Baripada, is the temple of Manatri, where Lord Shiva presides in the form of Kakharua Baidyanath. The natural beauty of the water channels surrounding the temple makes it a popular destination for the visitors. During the months of February and March, the Sivaratri festival of ten-day celebration takes place here, which is a major attraction here.

     

    Jwalamukhi temple - Jwalamukhi Temple is one of the 51 Shakti peeths of Goddess Shakti, which is devoted to the “Goddess of Light” or Goddess Jwalamukhi or the Flaming Mouth. This temple has a burning blue flame coming out of a rock chamber, which is prayed as a sign of the deity. Though one of the most sacred Hindu temples, Jwalamukhi temple has a dome made of gold that was gifted by Akbar, the Mughal Emperor. The best time for tourists to be there is from beginning of April- middle of October, which is during the Navratri festival.

     

    Maa Ambika Temple at Deokund - Tourists can go for a picnic to the scenic spot of Deokund, which is 55 km from Baripada. This place is situated approximately 33 km from Udala and falls under the Simlipal Forest range. On the top of the hill there is the temple of Goddess Ambika, which is the highlight of the place. Near the temple, there is a reservoir, named Kunda to control the 50 feet high waterfall. This is an ideal spot for tourists to go for picnic.
