    Varkala Beach - Varkala Beach, also known as the Papanasam Beach, is located in the Varkala town of Thiruvananthapuram District. The beach is an ideal location for sunbathing and swimming. Surrounded by lush green areas and golden sands, the beach lies in South Kerala at the north-end border of the district. Renowned for its small shops and flea markets, the beach also attracts people for its beautiful views of dusk and dawn. It is also known for a fresh water spring, which is located at a cliff. People take a holy dip in this water as it is believed that it helps in cleansing away the sins. Besides all this, some sections of the beach are also used by the local people for scattering the mortal remains of their relatives and friends into the sea. It is believed that the holy properties of the sea water will help the souls to reach heaven.

     

    Kappil Lake - Kappil Lake, one of the prime attractions of Varkala, is located at a distance of around eight kilometres north of Varkala. Dotted with dense coconut groves, the lake presents a view of the backwater that merges with the Arabian Sea. There is a bridge over the lake which provides views of the entire lake. Kerala tourism has set up the Kappil Boat Club from where pedal or motor boats can be hired. Kappil Beach, another attraction, located near the lake is referred as the meeting point of Kappil Lake and Arabian Sea. With thick rocks and hillocks, the beach is considered as a rocky stretch lacing a grey sea. Tourists can also visit Vettekkada Beach, which is located close to Kappil and Varkala.

     

    Janardanaswami Temple - Janardana Swami Temple, one of the religious sites of Varkala, is believed to have been constructed about 2,000 years ago. Located in the direction of Papasnanam beach, this shrine is considered holy. A large bell, displayed at the temple, was washed up from the wreck of a Dutch merchant vessel. According to legend, it is believed that the temple was constructed by a Pandyan king, when he was pardoned by Lord Brahma for a committed sin. It is said that Lord Brahma came in the dream of the king and told him about the location of the idol, which was submerged deep in the sea. The king took out the idol with the help of fishermen and enshrined it into the temple. Historians state that the original temple was destroyed by tidal waves, while the present structure was built by the Pandyan king on the same site as the original temple. Vavu Bali is a famous festival celebrated at the temple during new moon day in the month of Karkkidakam, a month in the Malayalam calendar.

     

    Anjengo Fort - Anjengo Fort, one of the prime attractions of Varkala, is a testimonial to many historic events and links related to the colonial rule in the region. Situated in the vicinity of Varkala town, the fort is believed to have been constructed between the 17th to 18th centuries. The period of construction of the fort can be estimated by the oldest buried grave dating to 1704. Presently, the fort remains in ruins but stands as a testimony to the fact that many foreign invaders had tried to capture it for getting a firm footing in Kerala. The name is believed to be derived from a small land with five coconut trees, which was given to the East India Company by the Queen of Attingal on lease. The small land served as a site for establishing a huge fort to help the British in carrying out numerous trading activities. Preserved under National Heritage Monuments, the fort also houses a cemetery that has the mortal remains of the occupants of the fort.

     

    Sarkara Devi Temple - Sarkara Devi Temple, one of the ancient temples, is located at Chirayinkeezhu, in the vicinity of Varkala. The temple has gained cultural and religious importance for its Kaliyoot festival, which is celebrated during the month of March or kumbham, as per the Malayalam calendar. Sree Saraswathy Temple, located in the vicinity, at Edava, is popularly known as Vidya Devi Temple. These temples are frequented during celebrations of Navarathri Sangeetholsavam and Vijayadesami Vidyarambam.

     

    Sivagiri Mutt - Sivagiri Mutt, one of the popular ashrams, was established by Sree Narayana Guru, the famous philosopher and social reformer. The premise of the site houses the tomb of the founder and his ‘samadhi’, which attracts large number of people. Constructed around 1904, the site served as the residence of the guru until 1928, when he left for his heavenly abode. The ashram is located at the top of the Sivagiri Hill near Varkala and is mostly visited by pilgrims during 30 December to 1 January, when an annual festival is organised. Dressed in yellow attire, the sages and saints residing in the ashram propagate the phenomena of One Caste, One Religion and One God. The premises of the site are also the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham.

     

    Varkala Tunnel - Varkala Tunnel, also known Varkala Turuthu, is one of the historic sites of the region. This site was constructed by the British to establish an inland waterway that was meant to serve as a trade route. The construction of the long tunnel was started around the mid-1860s and took around 14 years to complete. With a length of around 924 feet, the tunnel played a vital role in transferring ferry goods and people from Thiruvananthapuram to Kollam during the pre-independence era. The tunnel is located under the main cliff of the region and represents the architectural excellence of the workers and engineers of that era. Built under the supervision of T. Mahadeva Rao, the dewan of Travancore, the tunnel also provides way to Varkala’s TS canal, which passes through this delicate structure.

     

    Kaduvayil Thangal Dargah - Kaduvayil Thangal Dargah houses the shrine of a famous local Muslim saint named Kaduvayil Thangal. The holy shrine is located on National Highway 47 in between Kallambalam and Attingal.
