    The Lighthouse - The Lighthouse is located at the southern end of Kovalam Beach, at a hillock named Kurumkal. Due to this lighthouse, the southern end of the Kovalam Beach is called as Lighthouse Beach. This lighthouse is 30 metres long and is painted in red and white colour. Tourists visiting this lighthouse can climb the 142 spiral stairs to reach the observation platform, from where views of Beemapalli Mosque and Poovar are available.

     

    Lighthouse Beach - Lighthouse Beach, a long stretch of sand, is located along the Malabar Coast. Out of the three beaches of Kovalam, this beach is the largest. At the southern end of this beach, stands a 30 metre high lighthouse. This beach is named after this lighthouse, which is probably the prime attraction of this beach. The lighthouse has an observation platform, which can be reached by climbing 142 steps. Tourists can get a view of Beemapalli Mosque in one direction and Poovar on the other. Water sports like swimming, parasailing and surfing can be enjoyed at this beach. 

     

    Hawa Beach - Hawa Beach, popularly known as Eve's Beach, is the most popular of the three beaches of Kovalam. This beach lies opposite to Lighthouse Beach and is full of palm groves. Swimming is not preferred at this beach as the currents are quite strong. Tourists can be seen sunbathing and getting herbal massages at this beach. Catamaran rides can also be availed at Hawa Beach.

     

    Samudra Beach - Samudra Beach, which is just 4 km north of Kovalam, is a popular attraction. The beach owes its name to Hotel Samudra, which is operated by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. Forming the northern part of Kovalam Beach, this beach is popular among both Indian as well as international tourists. Numerous basic wooden fishing vessels can be seen near the beach.

     

    Thiruvallam Parasurama Temple - Thiruvallam Parasurama Temple is a 2000 year old temple, which is based on the banks of River Karamana. This temple is the only temple in the world that is dedicated to Lord Parasurama, who is believed to be the mythological creator of Kerala. During the Karkidaka Vavu day, devotees pay homage to the departed souls of their forefathers. As part of the religious ritual, devotees pray after taking a dip in the holy water of this temple. According to history, this temple was built during the 12th and 13th centuries. Managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board, this temple is a protected monument under the Archaeology Department of Kerala. Located about 9 km away from Kovalam Beach, this temple can be accessed by taxi or auto-rickshaw.

     

    Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium - Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium, which was established in 1997, is situated at Vizhinjam, which is an important fishing port in Kerala. This aquarium showcases the rarest species of invertebrates and ornamental fish in the world. Managed by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), this aquarium houses crabs, squirrelfish, moon wrasse, clownfish and butterfly fish. Visitors to the aquarium can also see lionfish, giant turtles, surgeonfish, triggerfish, piranhas and sharks. This aquarium has a pearl oyster, which can transform a mould of shell cement into a pearl by using the Image Pearl Production Technique. The aquarium is located around 1.3 km away from Kovalam, near Theatre Junction, and can be reached within 3 minutes.

     

    Akkulam Lake - Akkulam Lake is a popular picnic spot, which is located around 16.6 km away from Kovalam. The lake is basically an extension of Veli Lake, where it merges into the sea. The main attraction of this lake is the boat club, where boating can be done. Besides the lake, this place also has a children’s park, swimming pool, an Anthurium Project and a snack bar.

     

    Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour - Vizhinjam Beach was originally a commercial centre for the Europeans, Portuguese and the Dutch, who used to trade with the native kings. This beach is situated 4.7 km away from Kovalam, in the coastal town of Vizhinjam.  Vizhinjam Beach serves as a major sea port area. The area around the beach is dotted with several Ayurvedic treatment centres, where Ayurvedic massages and treatments are available.

    Karamana River - Karamana River, which is located around 14.2 km away from Kovalam, is a popular attraction. This river originates at the southern tip of the Western Ghats at Agastyar Koodam and flows through Thiruvananthapuram. Furthermore, this river flows 68 km westward and falls into the Arabian Sea at Panathura area near Kovalam. Killiyar, which joins Karamana River at Pallathukadavu, is its most famous tributary. This tributary originates in the village of Panavoor, which lies in Nedumangad Taluk. There are several bridges across the Karamana River, out of which the largest is at the Karamana. Other bridges that were built over this river are at Thrikkunnapuram, Mangattu Kadavu, Kundamon Kadavu and Vellaikadavu. This river also has bridges over Aruvikkara, Maruthoor kadavu, Aryanad and Malamukal

     

    Vellayani Lake - Vellayani Lake is a fresh water lake, which is located in the Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala. Covering an area of 7.5 sq km, this lake is the largest freshwater lake in Thiruvananthapuram District. Many people visit this lake during moonlit nights. Vellayani Lake attracts large number of tourists during Onam, when the boat race is held in the lake. Located about 7 km away from Kovalam, this lake can be reached by hiring country boats from Kovalam Beach.

     

    Aruvikkara - Aruvikkara, located around 25.3 km away from Kovalam, is one of the popular attractions in the region. This village is located on the banks of Karamana River in Thiruvananthapuram District. The main attraction of this place is the ancient Bhagavathi Temple, which is dedicated to goddess Durga. Visitors can see a stream of water flowing in front of the temple. This stream contains large fishes, which are fed by devotees visiting the shrine. The headquarters of the Wellington Water Distribution project is based at this place. This tourist attraction also features the Aruvikkara dam (mini dam), which provides water to Thiruvananthapuram.

     

    Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave - Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave is a historic spot, which is located just 1 km away from Kovalam in the seaside village Vizhinjam. These caves contain rock cut sculptures that belong to the 8th century. A temple dedicated to Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi is housed within the cave. This granite cave temple is built in the Tamil architectural style. The outer wall of this cave features an unfinished sculpture of Lord Shiva. In this sculpture of Lord Shiva, he is shown dancing and holding a bow.

     

    Vizhinjam Village - In Vizhinjam Village, there is a marine aquarium with a variety of fishes such as clownfish, squirrelfish, moon wrasse, sharks, lionfish, butterfly fish, giant turtles, triggerfish, surgeonfish, piranhas, etc. The unique feature of the Aquarium is the image pearl production, so people can buy pearls with images of Christ, idols of gods and goddess and Virgin Mary. There is another 18th century Cave temple is known for carved idols of Shiva and Parvati. As this is one of the few cave temples in Kerala and thousands of people visit it each year.

     

    Valiathura Pier - About 10 km from Kovalam, is the scenic Valiathura Pier which is usually frequented by local fishermen. During the monsoons, when the sea is rough, fishermen cannot take the boat and fish. So they throw the catamarans in sea from the pier and swim after them to fish. This daring act is a tourist delight.

     

    Analothbhava Matha Church - In Chowara, a small fishing village, with a variety of sightseeing destinations such as 6 km from Kovalam beach is the beautiful and ancient Analothbhava Matha Church.
