    Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary - Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home to different species of birds, including migratory birds from Siberia. This sanctuary is spread across 14 acres and was established by the Government of India for preserving coconut trees and mandrakes, which are the natural habitat of birds. The popular bird species found at this bird sanctuary are water duck, waterfowl, owl, heron, egret, cuckoo and Siberian cranes. Tourists can also see kingfishers, paradise fly-catchers, night herons and golden-backed woodpeckers. This sanctuary is best visited between the months of November and February when migratory birds from across the globe come here for mating. The ideal time for watching the local birds in this sanctuary is from June to August.

     

    Vembanad Lake - Vembanad Lake is commonly known as Vembanad Kayal or Vembanad Kol. It is one of the longest lakes in India and the largest in Kerala. This lake is called by different names like Punnamada Lake in Kuttanad and Kochi Lake in Kochi. The Kochi Lake also houses the Kochi Port, which is situated around two islands of Vallarpadam and Willingdon. Nehru Trophy Boat Race is celebrated annually in the Kuttanad region. Vembanad Lake is divided into two zones, namely the salt water zone and freshwater zone. There are varied species of birds, animals, reptiles and plants near this lake that make it an ideal tourist spot in the region. It also features more than 150 species of fish along with shrimps, crabs, squid and prawns.

     

    Kumarakom Backwaters - Kumarakom Backwaters is a major sightseeing destination that can be visited by renting a houseboat. These houseboats take visitors through the canals, lagoons, lakes, river and backwaters in the region. These houseboats comprise a living room, a bedroom, a bathroom and other important facilities. The temple is constructed in the traditional Kerala architectural style and is famous for its elephant pageant and unique art performances. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is thronged by tourists during the Vaikkath Ashtami festival, which is celebrated every year between November and December. Lord Shiva of this temple is called by the local inhabitants as Vaikkathappan. This idol of Lord Shiva is believed to be as old as 'Treta Yuga' and the temple is considered to be one of the oldest temples in Kerala.

     

    Bay Island Driftwood Museum - Bay Island Driftwood Museum is one of the popular museums in the Kumarakom region, which has a unique collection of driftwood articles. It is a unique museum, which houses a collection of twisted stumps of driftwood that were collected from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These driftwood articles have been made using an innovative modern art technique that holds high artistic value. Some of these articles are similar in appearance to animals, birds, reptiles, fishes and amphibians. The museum authorities take care of scraping, polishing, shaping and preservation of these unique driftwood articles. This museum is situated close to Nedumbassery Airport and Kottayam Railway Station which makes it easily accessible from varied parts of the state.

     

    St Mary's Church, Cheriapally - St Mary's Church is a famous church in the region which is located at Cheriapally. This church is around 12 km from the main city of Kottayam and was built by Thekkumkoor Maharaja in 1579. The church architecture displays a unique fusion of Portuguese and traditional Kerala architecture. The church walls are inscribed with beautiful murals that have been designed in both western and oriental architectural styles.

This mosque is famously known as Thazhathangadi Mosque, which lies on the banks of River Meenachil. It is more than 1000 years old and is considered to be one of the oldest mosques in India.

     

    St Mary's Church, Athirampuzha - St Mary's Church in Athirampuzha, dedicated to Saint Mary, was constructed in 1080. This church is about 10 km north of the main city of Kottayam. It is famous for a statue of St Sebastian which was brought by Portuguese colonial rulers and installed here. This statue is called as 'Adiyelpicha Roopam', which means tortured figure. It portrays St Sebastian being thrashed by his oppressors. An annual feast, lasting over five days, is organised at this church for honouring St Sebastian.

     

    Pathiramanal - Pathiramanal is mainly an island which covers over 10 acres of land. The term Pathiramanal refers to 'the sand of night' or 'midnight sand' and features a zoo and an aquarium. This island is believed to have emerged from the Vembanad Lake and is inhabited by varied species of migratory birds. Accessible by motorboats or speedboats, it is essentially a halt on the route from Kumarakom to Alleppey. This island can be accessed by speedboats from Alappuzha town, which take around one and a half hours to cover the entire distance. Boats are also available on the Muhamma-Kumarakom water route which takes around 40 minutes to reach this island.

     

    Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple - Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple, also known as Ettumanoor Mahadevar Temple, is one of the ancient Lord Shiva temples located near Kottayam in the state of Kerala. It is also believed that sage Vyasa and the Pandavas offered their prayers at this temple. The word 'manoor' in the name of the place Ettumanoor means 'the land of deer'.This temple was constructed in 1542 AD with Dravidian mural paintings decorating the main entrance and the walls. The temple is also popular for the 'arattu festival' which is celebrated every year on 'Thiruvathira Day' in February or March.
