    Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple - Thirunakkara Mahadeva temple was constructed in the early 16th century by the Raja of Thekkumkur. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and represents beautiful Kerala style of architecture. The temple is adorned with murals that depict themes of Hindu epics. The temple is visited by numerous tourists during the annual festival Aaraattu that lasts for 10 days. Various folk art forms like Mayilattom, Velakali and Kathakali are performed by professional dancers at the festival. A procession is also carried out on elephants, rendering glimpse into the traditions, customs and rituals of Kerala.

     

    Subrahmonia temple - Subrahmonia temple is situated at a distance of around 21 km in the Perunna village. It is believed that the temple was constructed by Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma of the Travancore kingdom. The temple has an idol of Devasenapathi, an incarnation of Lord Murugan, along with the idols of Lord Maha Ganapathi, Lord Ayyappa and Lord Krishna. The temple is visited during the month of Dhanu and Mahatma Gandhi is also believed to have visited this temple once.

     

    Vaikom - Vaikom is the capital town of the Vaikom taluka, situated on the north-west side of the Kottayam District. It has the Vembanad Lake on its west and various distributaries of the River Muvattupuzha flow through the town. It is counted amongst the oldest townships in Kottayam and is popular for the ancient Lord Shiva temple. The shrine is known as the Thekkan Kashi and is popular for the Vaikom Ashtami celebrations, held in the month of November.

     

    Elaveezhapoonchira - Elaveezhapoonchira is a beautiful hill station that lies in proximity to Melukavu Mattom. It is situated in the midst of three beautiful hillocks namely, Mankunnu, Kudayathoormala and Thonippara. The hill station derives its name from two words ‘Elaveezha’ and ‘poonchira’, meaning a valley where leaves do not fall. Elaveezhapoonchira, which spreads over an area of thousand acres, is a place where there are no trees or plantations. It is believed that the site was the bathing place of Paanchali, the legendary Queen of Mahabharata.

     

    Saraswathy Temple - Saraswathy temple is situated in the Panachikad village. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Saraswathy, the Goddess of learning and art. The temple has sculptures and paintings depicting various episodes of Indian mythology. It is popularly known as the Mookambika temple and organises the annual Vidhyarambham ceremony.

     

    St. Mary's Orthodox Church - St. Mary's Orthodox Church is located in Cheriyapalli at a distance of around 4 km from the destination. Being a prominent centre for the Syrian Christians of Kerala, the church originally belonged to the Malankara Orthodox Christians. It was constructed by the Raja of Tekkumur in 1579 in Kerala in Portuguese architectural styles. Tourists can also see the influence of Hindu temple architectural styles. Depicting biblical and non-biblical themes, the walls of the church are adorned with murals and stone carvings. The church is especially visited for the feasts of St. Mary and St. Mary’s Feast of Assumption that are held on January 15 and August 15 respectively.

     

    Bay Island Driftwood Museum - Bay Island Driftwood Museum is situated in the Kumarakom village, at a distance of around 14 km from Kottayam. The museum displays a wide collection of driftwood sculptures, modern artefacts and root sculptures of various shapes and designs. It was constructed by Raji Punnoose, proprietor and curator, who won an award by the Limca Book of Records in 2001. The museum has various artefacts developed by a school teacher during her tenure in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. She collected a wide variety of driftwood, twisted tree trunks, stumps and roots from the banks of the Bay of Bengal and transformed these into beautiful art pieces. Some of the wood pieces and roots are considered to be centuries old. These pieces and roots are subjected to cleansing, dead parts removal, scraping and trimming.

     

    Monroe Light - Monroe Light is situated in Pallom at a distance of around 8 km from Kottayam and east of the Vembanad Lake. It was established by Colonel Monroe, a local resident, in 1813.

     

    Poonjar Palace - Poonjar Palace situated in the Meenachil Taluka is surrounded by huge walls. The palace has a collection of antiques and furniture, including chandeliers, jewel boxes, weapons, grain measurer, palm leaf engravings and statues. The sculptures of Nataraja, a palanquin and a thoni carved out of a single piece of wood for Ayurvedic massage can also be seen in the palace. The nearby Madurai Meenakshi temple is also visited by several tourists.

     

    Island of Pathiramanal - Island of Pathiramanal in the Alappuzha District of Kerala is quite popular among the ornithologists. The name of the island is derived from the word ‘Pathiramanal’ which means ‘sands of night’. It is situated in the middle of the Vembanad Lake and is inhabited by pintail duck, night heron, common teal, cormorant, darter and Indian shag. The purple-heron, gull, tern, large egret, cattle egret, little egret and pheasant tailed jacanas are some of the other prominent birds seen on the island. The island can be reached by backwater cruises, motor boats and speed boats.

     

    Kottathavalam - Kottathavalam is situated on the Murugan Hills at Kurisumala. It is a cave carved from a rock surface and is believed to be the resting place of the Madurai Royal Family. Various statues and sculptures of Gods and Goddesses, such as Madurai-Meenakshi, Ayyappa, Murugan and Kannaki, can be seen in the cave. Besides these, sculptures of weapons and arms used during the ancient period can also be seen in the cave.

     

    Thazhathangady Juma Masjid - Thazhathangady Juma Masjid, also known as the Taj Juma Masjid, is located on the banks of the Meenachil River. The foundation of the shrine was laid by the members of the Jama-Athe in 1959 and was completed in 1964. Renowned for its wood carvings and beautiful architecture, the mosque was the abode of Muslims who arrived in Kottayam from different parts of Kerala. Since 1947, the residents of the mosque follow the Hanafi tradition, under the guidance of the Kottayam Settu Masjid. The mosque was dedicated to the residents of the area by Haji Abdul Karim Sahib, the first President of the Jama-Athe. It was maintained by Alhaj P. P. Ahmed Alim Sahib, who was also the Imam from 1964 to 1993.

     

    Mozart Art Gallery - Mozart Art Gallery, a private art gallery owned and managed by the eminent artist M. Somu, is situated in Ayemenem village. Located within his residential complex, this place is a haven for the lovers of art, be it paintings or sketches. The art gallery showcases a collection of his work. M. Somu has used a variety of paints like oil, acrylic, water color, charcoal, pencil, and sometimes a combination of more than one media.     Pallippurathu Kavu - Pallippurathu Kavu is an ancient shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga, the presiding deity of the village. The temple is visited during the annual Kumbhaka Mahotsav, celebrated on the 10th day of Pathamudaya.
